How can Medicinal Plants Heal Skin?

There is a number of various herbs that can be used for the treatment of pimples: aloe, camomile, pot marigold, sage, hypericum etc. Most of the herbal medications (juices, infusions, decoctions) meant for the treatment of skin disorders are for external use only – compresses and masques are prepared out of them. Such kinds of medications work locally. It is rare that drinkable herbal medications are used for treating acne.

The most commonly used herbs and their effects:

• Camomile and pot marigold accelerate the process of bruised skin healing because of their anti-inflammatory effects.
• The menthol accumulated in peppermint has antiseptic effects; it pleasantly cools and improves blood circulation as well as helps provide cells with oxygen more effectively. This advances skin healing.
• The disinfecting feature of the sage prevents the appearance of new pimples. It also enhances metabolism and positively effects skin regeneration.
• Hypericum prevents the appearance of blackheads that are the precursors of pimples.
• Lemon juice possesses disinfecting features and dries the pimples up.

Herbal Recipes to Cure Acne:

The masque for skin cleansing

1 tablespoon of pot marigold tincture (Calendulae tinctura) is to be dissolved in 2 glasses of water. The solution is applied to face on cotton balls, avoiding the eye, mouth and nose areas. In 10-15 minutes the masque is to be taken away and the face is to be rinsed. This procedure gives good disinfecting effects, however, may leave the skin too dry.

Herbal remedies for external use

• Wash the picked leave of aloe vera (Aloes arborescentis folium recens), cut off the thorns and peel off the skin. The leaves that are prepared in such a way are crushed until they reach the state of smooth paste. This mass is applied on face for 15 minutes and then rinsed off with warm water.

• The fresh juice of parsley (Petroselini succus) is applied on cleansed skin for not less than three times a day.

• The juice of the snowball tree berries (Viburni succus) and honey are mixed in equal parts (1:1). The received mix is applied on face and washed away with warm water in 20 minutes.

• Press the juice out of ribwort leaves (Plantaginis lanceolatae folia). Apply the juice on to the areas of bruised skin.

• The cloves of garlic (Allium sativum) are chopped into small pieces and applied on to the areas effected by acne.

• Boil camomile in a bowl and "steam clean" the face by putting it over a pan of boiling water with a towel over your head to trap the steam; this procedure can be repeated daily.
